Cyril Smith (1928-2010) was a British pedophile who also worked as a politician. He targeted vulnerable young boys in care homes, with the youngest being 8 years old. The sexual predator was described in 2010 by then Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg as "a beacon" of the party.[1]
Numerous attempts to hold Smith accountable for the complaints made against him were blocked. As stated by the Manchester Evening News, the establishment were aware of Smith's crimes and covered them up.[2] According to detective Jack Tasker, Smith was never prosecuted because of fears it would expose other child abusers within the political establishment.[3]
