"The Silent Service is a former documentary dramatic anthology television series about the submarine fleet of the United States Navy. The syndicated series aired seventy-nine episodes from April 7, 1957, to November 28, 1958.[1]
Each episode was based on fact and employed combat footage from the files of the Navy. The stories varied between the South Pacific during World War II and the Korean War. The series was the brainchild of Rear Admiral Thomas Michael Dykers, Sr. (1905-1975), who retired from the Navy in 1949 after twenty-two years of service. The Navy loaned Dykers the U.S.S. Sawfish for the filming of several episodes.[1]
Some of the titles of the episodes include "The Triton's Christmas," "The Tigershark," "The Sundfisher's Cook," and "The Nautilus and the Nuns." Among the actors appearing once or multiple times on the series were Paul Picerni, Ross Elliott, Ron Foster, Brett King, Robert Knapp, Ed Nelson, Jerry Paris, Jim Davis, and DeForest Kelley.[1]
