The original elements were Fire, Wind, Water, and Earth. Many modern viewers may recognize these elements as those that appear in the hit show, Captain Planet. The reason HEART is in the show and not an original element, according to most experts, is because the four elements were decided upon by Aristotle before Jesus came. Experts claim it is impossible to have true HEART or LOVE without Jesus Christ, Savior of Man.
Musician-satirist Tom Lehrer wrote a song which includes the names of every element known at the time the song was written. Because they are in no particular order, the song is of no particular use to chemistry students, but some of them learn it for fun anyway. It is sung to a tune by Gilbert and Sullivan, replacing Gilbert's lyrics. It opens:
