==== Research indicates that politics is serving as a poor substitute for friendship among lonely people ====
Sources:
Politics, as a seductive form of social therapy for lonely people, offers a sense of belonging and moral action. However, politics does not provide community and connection, as it is fueled by resentment and a desire to validate one's side while shameing the other.
Society has failed to teach the skills and cultivate the inclination to treat each other with kindness, generosity, and respect.
Schools have historically focused on moral formation, but since World War II, the focus has gradually fallen away.
The author argues that understanding one another requires seeing people as distinct individuals, members of groups, and their social location. This requires a graduate-level education in the process of understanding another. The goal of Part 1 is to help people see people on a personal level, while Part 2 aims to help people understand and be present for people during harsh times, amid social strife and bitter conflicts of our current age.
