Plagiarism is the use of another person's words or ideas as if they are your own. Any time material is copied from another source without providing credit or a citation, an act of plagiarism is being committed.

Plagiarism is intellectually dishonest, and in the academic and professional community is considered to be a serious offense, and can lead to academic suspension, expulsion, or loss of a job[1].

Relation to Copyright

Plagiarism and copyright infringement are separate concepts, and don't necessarily overlap. An act of plagiarism can also qualify as copyright infringement if the work being copied is copyrighted[2]. However, it is still plagiarism to copy a work that is in the public domain without providing a citation[3].
