Gluttony is the inability to resist one's appetite. According to the Bible, gluttony is a sin. In addition, according to Roman Catholic theology, gluttony is one of the Seven Deadly Sins. Today, it is most associated with overeating, but in Medieval times, drunkenness was considered a prominent form of gluttony (this might explain why the punishment for gluttons in Dante's Inferno is eternal rain).
