Chile has also experienced numerous massive earthquakes: of the 46 known earthquakes estimated at magnitude >= 8.5, one-third have occurred in Chile, including the 1960 Valdivia earthquake which was measured at magnitude 9.5, the strongest ever recorded. On four occasions, two earthquakes with magnitude >= 8.5 have had the same Chilean epicenter.

Chile has experienced numerous massive earthquakes, being located within the "Ring of Fire": of the 46 known earthquakes estimated at magnitude >= 8.5, one-third have occurred in Chile, including the 1960 Valdivia earthquake which was measured at magnitude 9.5, the strongest ever recorded. On four occasions, two earthquakes with magnitude >= 8.5 have had the same Chilean epicenter. Furthermore, the strongest estimated earthquake (before seismographs were invented) also took place in Chile around 1800 BC, also estimated in the magnitude 9.5 range.
