The shooter arrived at the site 3 hours early. At 3pm he triggered a metal detector as he tried to gain access to the event, and was found to be carrying a rangefinder – a gun sight typically used by marksmen preparing to shoot at distance. Security officers allowed him in.
The shooter walked from his van carrying an [[AR-15]] and wearing camouflage pants in plain sight of rallygoers. The line of sight (LOS) distance from the building's rooftop was approximately 130 yards to the podium where President Trump was speaking. The Secret Service sniper team is said to have had him in their sights for several minutes before taking him out. The rules of engagement (ROE) prohibited the Secret Service from shooting until the gunman shot first.
