He obtained bachelor's and master's degrees from NSU and a doctorate in developmental education from the historically black (though he is white) Grambling State University in Grambling in Lincoln Parish in north Louisiana. He came to NSU in 1988 as a track and field coach and moved up the administrative ladder over the years. In 1999, he was appointed director of alumni affairs, and in 2003, director of alumni development in 2003. In 2005, he became the executive director of the NSU Foundation. In Maggio's short time as president, NSU reported an unprecedented increase in grants and private gifts for the first half of 2017 and a 7.7 percent increase in enrollment fin the fall semester of 2017. A [[Roman Catholic]], Maggio is of Italian ancestry. He and his wife, the former Jennifer Zeagler, reside in the president's home on campus. They have three children, Melanie, Scott, and Emily Maggio.<ref name=bio/>
