Svalbard or Spitsbergen is an archipelago and territory of the Kingdom of Norway in the Barents Sea. Its capital, Longyearbyen, is the world's northenmost city. The population of Svalbard includes a significant Russian community which has for decades worked coal mines in the islands by agreement between the former Soviet Union and Norway[1]. Other economic activities include whaling, 'ice tourism' and trapping.
