Yemen is a nation occupying the southern portion of the Arabian peninsula; it is bounded by Saudi Arabia and Oman. It has an area of 203,850 square miles (527,968 sq km) and a population of 15.9 million (1995). The capital is Sana'a and the main port is Aden.

Prior to unification in 1990 Yemen was divided between the Yemen Arab Republic (north Yemen), the capital of which was Sana'a, and the People's Republic of South Yemen, the capital of which was Aden, and which had been a British protectorate between 1838 and 1967.
