The Faroe Islands are an archipelago in the North Atlantic Ocean, lying approximately midway between northern Scotland and Iceland. They are a part of Denmark, though with a high degree of local autonomy. The group consists of 18 islands (of which one is uninhabited) and numerous islets and rocks; the total land area is 1,399 km2. The Faroes have a population of 49,000.
