On June 11, 2019, Waskom passed an ordinance which declared the city to be a "[[Sanctuary city for the unborn]]", making it illegal to perform [[abortion]]s or operate an abortion clinic within the city; Waskom thus became the first such city in the United States to effectively outlaw abortion within its jurisdiction.  There were and are no such clinics in the small city — the nearest clinic is 20 miles away in [[Shreveport]] — and in any event the ordinance would not be effective until and unless [[Roe v. Wade]] was overturned.
