Morgan Stanley is an American multinational financial services company headquartered in New York City. The firm provides investment banking, securities, wealth management and investment management services to corporations, governments, financial institutions and individual clients worldwide.[1]

As of 2026, Morgan Stanley operates globally and employs more than 80,000 people in over 40 countries.[2] The company is one of the world's largest investment banks and financial institutions.[3]

History

Morgan Stanley was founded on 16 September 1935 by Henry S. Morgan and Harold Stanley. Its creation followed the passage of the United States Banking Act of 1933 (commonly known as the Glass-Steagall Act), which required the separation of commercial and investment banking activities. As a result, the founders left J.P. Morgan & Co. and established a new investment banking partnership that became Morgan Stanley.[2]

During the post-war era, Morgan Stanley became a leading underwriter of corporate securities and expanded internationally. In 1947, the firm led the issuance of the first bond for the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank).[2]

The company broadened its operations throughout the second half of the twentieth century, developing significant businesses in mergers and acquisitions, securities trading, research and wealth management.[2]

In 1986, Morgan Stanley became a publicly traded company.[2]

In 1997, the firm merged with Dean Witter Discover & Co., creating Morgan Stanley Dean Witter. The company later returned to the Morgan Stanley name.[3]

Following the global financial crisis of 2008, Morgan Stanley converted to a bank holding company and expanded its wealth management operations through a joint venture with Smith Barney.[2]

Major acquisitions in the twenty-first century have included E*TRADE and Eaton Vance, strengthening the firm's wealth management and asset management businesses.[2]

Operations

Morgan Stanley operates through three principal business segments:[4]

  • Institutional Securities – Investment banking, capital raising, mergers and acquisitions advisory services, securities trading and market-making.
  • Wealth Management – Financial planning, brokerage services, banking products and investment advisory services for individuals and institutions.
  • Investment Management – Asset management services for institutional and retail clients.

The firm serves corporations, governments, sovereign wealth funds, pension funds, foundations and individual investors around the world.[5]

World Trade Center

Prior to the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001, Morgan Stanley was one of the largest tenants of the World Trade Center complex in New York City. The firm occupied multiple floors within the South Tower (Two World Trade Center) and maintained thousands of employees at the site.[6]

The successful evacuation of most Morgan Stanley employees before the collapse of the building became a notable example of emergency preparedness and crisis management during the attacks.[7]
