Transliteration is the process of converting names and other words into another alphabet, without any attempt at translation.
The Japanese language has transliterated many English loan words:
- apartment => アパート (a-pa-a-to)
- Pocket Monsters => ポケモン (po-ke-mo-n) See: Pokémon
Some transliterations hardly change the pronunciation at all:
- radio => ラジオ (ra-ji-o) (RAH DEE OH)
PROBLEM
This is not transliteration. This is phonic adoption. See article for actual definition. Your last example was transliteration:
radio => ラジオ (ra-ji-o) (RAH DEE OH)
