Clyde Tombaugh (1906-1997) was an American astronomer who is best known for his discovery of Pluto, which was recently downgraded from the status of planet to that of dwarf planet.

Tombaugh had an interest in astronomy from a young age. He bought a Sears telescope, but before he was 20, he had built his own because he was unsatisfied with the quality of the Sears one. [1]

In February 1930, Tombaugh discovered Pluto at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Tombaugh graduated from the University of Kansas and Northern Arizona University. [2]
