Admiral Chester W. Nimitz (1885-1966) was Fleet Admiral and Commander in chief of Pacific fleet (CINCPAC) during World War II. Nimitz was born on 24 February 1885, and died 20 February 1966.[1]

Nimitz entered the Naval Academy without first graduating from high school, but was an excellent student and graduated 7th in a class of 114 in 1905.[2] As Ensign, Nimitz ran the USS Decatur aground and was court martialed.[3] Although this was often a career ending event,[4] he received a letter of reprimand, persevered, and overcame this stumbling block.[5] Nimitz was appointed Pacific Commander after Pearl Harbor.[6]

In retirement, Admiral Nimitz worked to build good will with Japan.[7]

Chester W. Nimitz had a son, also named Chester Nimitz, who also became an admiral in the U.S. Navy.[8]
