North Shields is an industrial town in the Tyneside conurbation in north-east England, on the north bank of the River Tyne between Wallsend and Tynemouth (where the river enters the North Sea. Traditional industries included coal mining and coal export, and shipbuilding. It now has a small sea-fishing fleet, and some ship repair is carried on; the town is also the administrative centre for the Metropolitan Borough of North Tyneside. North Shields is connected to Newcastle upon Tyne by the Tyne & Wear Metro, and to South Shields by ferry. The Tyne Commissioners Quay in North Shields is the terminus for ferry services to Scandinavia, the Netherlands and Germany.
