Science, unlike other academic fields, is not just a body of knowledge but also a methodology for discovering and classifying knowledge. The scope of science encompasses all physical phenomena, but there is more for scientists to study than the material world and natural processes.
The human mind, considered by some materialists, to be completely determined by natural processes, has what philosophers call free will. That is, we human beings can decide to believe or not to believe, to perform an action or not to perform it (see Stephen Covey's "Habit #1: Be proactive").
