William Orville Douglas (October 16, 1898 – January 19, 1980) was a member of the Supreme Court serving from 1939 to 1975 long past the age at which he was capable of functioning in his role as Associate Justice.  He is widely regarded as an activist judge, creating the doctrine of prenumbral rights in the case [[Connecticut v. Griswold]].
