The Institute of Medicine (IOM) is one of United States National Academies, alongside the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the National Research Council. The current president of the IOM is Harvey Fineberg, MD, PhD.
Charter and Mission
The Institute of Medicine serves as adviser to the nation to improve health. Established in 1970 under the charter of the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine provides independent, objective, evidence-based advice to policymakers, health professionals, the private sector, and the public.
Reports
Once commissioned, whatever agency requested a study (be it government or private sector) has no further input into the study process. This ensures a process free of undue outside influence. The reports are published in the form of books which are published by National Academies Press which can be ordered from the IOM website. Reports can also be read electronically free of charge from the IOM website.
Membership
Members are elected into the IOM each year by the current membership. Two current members must nominate a candidate to be considered for membership. Members are sought across all medical disciplines, including nursing, and the main criterion for membership is outstanding professional achievement.
