A prairie dog is a small ground dwelling mammal common to the grasslands of North America. The prairie dog is a rodent and a member of the Sciuridae (squirrel) family. Prairie dogs are so named because of their doglike bark and are mostly found west of the Mississippi River. They live in colonies and burrow underground. Their bark is a warning signal to other prairie dogs in the colony.
