The unpopular President, Andrew Johnson, had been impeached while in office. Although not impeached of his office, it showed that he would not be nominated by the Republican party for reelection. They instead chose military hero, Ulysses S. Grant, to run on the Republican ticket. The Democrats chose Horatio Seymour as their candidate. The results of the election were:
