The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was the name of the UK from January 1801 to April 1927. The state was created from the merger of the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland.
In December 1922 Ireland was partitioned into Northern Ireland, which remained within the union, and the Irish Free State (today the Republic of Ireland) which became independent. In 1927 the name of the state was officially changed to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to reflect the partition of Ireland.
