The area of Djibouti is 8,958 square miles (22,980 sq km) and it has a population of 496,000 (2007 est). The capital city is also called Djibouti.

Djibouti was formerly known as French Somaliland and as the French Territory of the Afars and Isars; it gained independence as the Republic of Djibouti on 27 June 1977.
