Some dispurte exists as to whether the easternmost point of the Caprivi Strip - a narrow strip of land that is part of Namibia extending eastwards from its main body of territory - touches the westernmost point of [[Zimbabwe]].
Namibia has an area of 318,261 square miles (824,292 sq km). The capital city is [[Windhoek]], located in the centre of the country; other major centres include the ports of Swakopmund and Walvis Bay (the latter being a former exclave of South Africa which was ceded to Namibia in 1994).
Namibia was colonised by [[Germany]] in 1884 as German South-West Africa. Successive rebellions between 1893 and 1907 were brutally crushed by German forces. South-West Africa was occupied by South African forces in 1914-15 during [[World War I]] and was subsequently ruled by South Africa as a mandated territory. In 1966 the South West Africa Peoples Organisation (SWAPO) launched a guerrilla war against the occupying South Africans, and in 1988 South Africa agreed to a transition of power.
