A gamete is a haploid cell that exists in organisms that engage in sexual reproduction. Gametes are produced by a process of cell division known as meiosis, during which adiploid (2n) gametocyte cell halves its number of chromosomes during several divisions, forming haploid (n) cells.
During fertilization, two gametes fuse together to form a new diploid cell, known as a zygote. In animals, gametes are produced by the gonads.
