Online slang terms include special words like "lurking" and "troll", but most are abbreviations or symbols.

Since no one can hear you laugh or see you smile/scowl, symbols or abbreviations can be used to express emotion.

Abbreviations

  • LOL - A common Internet acronym used mostly in chat applications to express amusement, standing for Laugh(ing) Out Loud.

Symbols

  • ;-) is a wink
  • :-) is a smile - eventually known as a "smiley" and first posted 44 years ago by Scott E. Fahlman [1]
  • :-( is a frown

There are many variations on the above symbols (which are also known as 'emoticons'). We will not list them here but refer the reader to a more comprehensive list.
