On November 14, 2006, Mills was placed on the Patriots injury reserve list. He did not appear in any regular season games. While attending the University of Tulsa Mills played tight end, fullback, H-back and backup long snapper. He was generally know as one of college footballs best tight ends during his playing time with the Tulsa Golden Hurricane's. In his 2005 senior season he broke the NCAA tight end record for receiving yards in a season when he had 87 receptions for 1,235 yards.
