Online slang terms include special words like "lurking" and "troll", but most are abbreviations or symbols.

Since no one can hear you laugh or see you smile/scowl, symbols or abbreviations can be used to express emotion.

Abbreviations

  • LOL - A common Internet acronym used mostly in chat applications to express amusement, standing for Laugh(ing) Out Loud.

Symbols

These are meant to be viewed by turning one's head sideways to the left.

  • :-) is a smile - eventually known as a "smiley" and first posted 44 years ago by Scott E. Fahlman [1]
  • ;-) is a wink
  • :-( is a frown

There are many variations on the above symbols (which are also known as 'emoticons'). Some symbols are called emoticons but are really examples of sideways ASCII art.

We will not list them all here but refer the reader to a more comprehensive list.
