The Solid South is a term describing the voting practices of the southern United States from the Reconstruction until the later 20th century, when the region voted solidly with the Democractic Party. More recently, the South has aligned itself more with the conservative Republican Party, and, especially since the time of Richard Nixon, the Solid South has reversed itself, becoming a bastion for Republicans. In 1980, Jimmy Carter only carried one southern state: his home state of Georgia, and since then southerner Bill Clinton is the only Democratic Presidential candidate to carry any state in the south.
