In the first Back to the Future, Doc is away working on his new invention. In the beginning Marty goes to his house to look for him. Doc calls him and lets him know that all his clocks are 20 minutes slow, meaning Marty is late for school. Once at school he meets up with this girlfriend Jennifer but is caught by the principal Mr. Strictland for being late. The principle tells Marty he is a slacker and that no McFly ever amounted to anything in the history of Hill Valley to which Marty responds that "history is about to change".

He returns home after school by hooking bumpers on his skateboard. When he gets home he learns that Biff Tannen trashed the family car because he was drinking and driving. His family is going nowhere fast, his mother is overweight and an alcholic, his old man is a coward who is submissive to Biff and does all his work for him, his sister is ugly and has no boyfriend and his older brother is working a dead end job.
