The Battle of Sentinum in 295 B.C. took place during the Third Samnite War and was fought between Rome and a combined army of Etruscans, Gauls, and Samnites. The Romans, under Fabius Rullinaus and Publiu Decius Mus (son of the hero of the Latin War) were hard pressed. Decius, like his father in the Battle of Vesusvius, deliberately sacrificed his life when the battle began to go against Rome; his men rallied to win an overwhelming victory. Due to this battle the Etruscans and Gauls both made peace, although the Samnites would continue fighting for several more years.
