Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday in the United States celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. The first Thanksgiving celebration was held in October 1621 by Pilgrims celebrating the successful harvest by the Plymouth Colony, with the assistance of the Native Americans living in the area, after a difficult winter where many colonists died of starvation.

Canada also has a Thanksgiving day, which is celebrated on the second Monday in October.

In 1789 President George Washington proclaimed Thanksgiving Day as the last Thursday in November. In 1941, the United States Congress passed a resolution decreeing that Thanksgiving should fall on the fourth Thursday of November.

Traditional thanksgiving foods include: turkey, sweet potatoes, and corn, which were eaten by the Pilgrims on the first Thanksgiving day.
