Ngo Dinh Diem was the first president of South Vietnam. Ngo Dinh Diem was unpopular, and the United States feared that an election in the South might choose North Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh’s communists to rule so they postponed the elections. In 1963, South Vietnamese generals took over South Vietnam and assassinated Ngo Dinh Diem.
