In 2006, Seau announced that he would retire from the NFL and held a retirement party in August to make the announcement official<ref>http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2548201</ref>.  Just four days after his retirement party however he signed a one year contract with the [[New England Patriots]] <ref>http://www.patriots.com/search/index.cfm?ac=searchdetail&pid=20575&pcid=47</ref>. As a Patriot linebacker he started all but one game and made 69 total tackles and one sack until the eleventh game of the season when he broke his arm while making a tackle<ref>http://www.patriots.com/search/index.cfm?ac=searchdetail&pid=22709&pcid=47</ref>. Facing the choice of reterment or resigning with the Patriots for another year, Seau chose resigning with the Patriots and on May 21, 2007 did so by signing a one year contract<ref>http://www.patriots.com/search/index.cfm?ac=searchdetail&pid=25691&pcid=47</ref>.
