Fish and chips are a popular British fast food and are enjoyed across the world. The fish is a piece of common white fish (typically cod, haddock, plaice or skate) deep fried in batter. The chips are sliced deep-fried potatoes similar to, but more substantial than, french fries. They are traditionally served in paper, seasoned with salt and vinegar.
Fish and chips are traditionally associated with mushy peas but can also be served with a wide variety of condiments and sauces.
In the British Isles, fish and chips are sold by chip shops, one of the most popular British food establishments.
