Self-esteem is the mentality of believing yourself something special. The media, in particular children's shows, have been saying "Believe in yourself" for the better part of thirty years[Citation Needed].
Some hyper-conservatives feel that this is a part of the conspiricy by the media to raise a generation of prideful, ignorant liberals. For of course, if you believe in yourself you're not believing in Jesus, hence, you become conceited and self-rightous.
