John Glenn (1921 - ) was the first American astronaut to orbit the earth.
Glenn served as a pilot in World War II and the Korean War. On February 20th, 1962 he became the first American to orbit the earth, doing so three times in the space capsule Friendship 7.
Getting involved in politics, John Glenn elected as a Democratic senator for the state of Ohio serving from 1975 until his retirement in 1999. Because of his military experience and patriotism, Glenn is held by most to be a democrat in name only (DINO).
