As defined by the 1983 edition of the American Heritage Dictionary (Houghton Mifflin)a vaccine is "a suspension of weakened or killed microorganims, as of viruses or bacteria, used to vaccinate," or innoculate against certain disease.

While many in the medical field laud vaccines for infants, there are some dissenting opinions on unrestricted vaccine usage. Some of today's contemporary vaccines are verifiably a product of aborted fetal tissue.

The chemical thimerosal, also a preservative used in vaccines during the 1990s, has been theorized as a potential link to autism. Its usage as a preservative has dwindled in the past five years, though some vaccines still contain trace amounts.
