The instincts forming the id were classified by Freud into two categories: the life instincts — those necessary for a pleasurable survival — and the death instincts, the generally subconcious wish desire to die as a means of putting to an end the struggle to survive and be happy. The latter are considered to remain suppressed under the majority of circumstances, although breaks do, unfortunately, occur.
