The War of the Worlds is a novel by H.G. Wells that was first published in 1898. The novel deals with a possible invasion of Earth by fictional Martians.
Adaptations
The book has been reworked many times. There have been modernizations, sequels by other authors, alternate tellings (Including one where Superman fights the Martians!), several films, and even a musical.
