Bipolar disorder (also called "manic depression") is a psychiatric condition characterized by extreme mood swings. There are two types of bipolar disorder: Bipolar I and Bipolar II.
Bipolar II
Bipolar II is characterized by swings from extreme depression to hypomania.
Hypomania is a condition characterized by overconfidence, creativity, ability to focus, and viewing of problems in a more positive light. Hypomania can lead to reckless and/or inappropriate behavior.
Bipolar I
Bipolar I is characterized by swings from extreme depression to mania.
Mania is similar to hypomania, but is more extreme and often includes psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and/or paranoia.
