Anwar Sadat

Anwar Sadat was the president of Egypt until he was assassinated by Islamic extremists in 1981 during an Egyptian military parade.

He took over as ruler of Egypt after the death of Nasser in 1970. Although he fought the Yom Kippur War with Israel in 1973, he was also the first Arab ruler to come to talk to Israel and, after a series of meetings, the first to sign a peace deal with Israel, the Camp David Accords in 1979 officially ending three decades of war.
