The '''Spanish Armada''' (La Armada Invencible) was the battle fleet sent by [[Philip II]] of Spain in the summer of 1588 to the [[English Channel]]; its aim was to enable a Spanish army in [[Flanders]] to cross the channel and conquer England. The Spanish fleet was spotted off Land's End in Cornwall in July 1588, and as it passed along the English Channel its heavy [[galleon]]s were harried by more mobile English vessels under the leadership of [[Charles Howard]] of Effingham, Sir [[Francis Drake]], and Sir [[John Hawkins]]. The Armada moored off [[Calais]] on 6 August, and was attacked with fireships (burning vessels) by the English. The Armada scattered and was driven north into the [[North Sea]], its mission unfulfilled. Winds and currents, and the waiting English, meant that the only way back to Spain for the Armada was round the borth coast of [[Scotland]]. Many ships and lives were lost attempting to negotiate the unknown and treacherous coasts in stormy weather.
