The Battle of Fair Oaks was a battle in the American Civil War, which lasted from May to June, 1862. It happened when General Joseph Johnston made plans to stop the advancing armies of General George McClellan. The actual attack did little to change the positions of either army. During the engagement, General Johnston was wounded and General Gustavus Smith took brief command. President Jefferson Davis replaced him with General Robert E. Lee. The battle ended indesisively.
