|There were several theories about the origin of the Moon. Most of the older theories had been discarded in the face of observations (for example based on lunar samples). The currently accepted theory is that the Moon originated from a collision early in Earth's history which created an orbiting ring of debris from the iron-poor surface of the planet which eventually coalesced into the moon. This theory explains many things that spoke against the older theories, but other scientists have raised new points may speak against it if the theory fails to explain them.

|There were accepted theories about the origin of the Moon, but they were disproved by examination of lunar samples. Since then there is no widely accepted theory among (non-creationist) scientists about the origin of the Moon.  One theory, which is untestable, is that the Moon originated from a collision early in Earth's history that created an orbiting ring of debris from the iron-poor surface of the planet, which eventually coalesced into the Moon. Many scientists have published articles against this hypothesis, noting (for example) that the Moon lacks many elements found in the Earth's crust.
