Uhura

Uhura was the communications officer in the original Star Trek TV series. As a black actress, starring roles at that time were rare, but were part of Gene Roddenberry's diversified cast. Another character with little plot development, it was hard to get a feeling for her personality. Snippets from different episodes showed someone who could be a bit seductive and concerned about losing her looks and somewhat emotionally fragile, but was always a professional when doing her job.

The role of Uhura was played by actress Nichelle Nichols. The first black-white kiss on television was her character and Captain Kirk, albeit forced to happen by aliens playing a game.
