The New England Patriots are a National Football League franchise team. The Patriots, also know to fans as the "Pats", are based in Foxboro, Massachusetts. Since they are located in the eastern region of the United State the Patriots belong to the Eastern Division of American Football Conference (AFC). Originally know as the Boston Patriots the franchise changed their name in 1971 to the New England Patriots to better reflect how they represented the New England area. The states generally considered "Patriot states" are Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine.
The Patriots in their tenure in the NFL have gone to five Super Bowls and have won three. The first Super Bowl trip for the Patriots was in 1985 vs. the Chicago Bears. The Patriots lost the game by a score of 42 to 10. In 1995 the Pats took another try at a Super Bowl victory but fell short vs. the Green Bay Packers in a 35 - 21 loss. Finally for the Patriots, the 2001 season ended in a Super Bowl triumph. The Patriots beat the heavily favored Saint Louis Rams in a thrilling 21-17 victory. The Patriots again won Super Bowls in 2004 vs. the Carolina Panthers and 2005 vs. the Philadelphia Eagles, and cemented themselves as one of the National Football League's greatest teams ever with three Super Bowl wins in four years.
