The region was first settled by [[Native American]] Indians approximately 12,000 years ago. Later, in the 18th century, Europeans settled the established a settlement that would later become Tucson. The town did not officially become a part of the United States until the 1850s, with the Gadsden Purchase. During the 1860s, the town was allied with the Confederate States of America. The [[University of Arizona]] was established in 1885 in Tucson. Tucson was capital of Arizona for some time and until about 1930, Phoenix was smaller than its sister city.
